Istanbul (CNN) — Several journalists accused of being involved in an alleged plot to overthrow the Turkish government appeared in an Istanbul court on Tuesday for the first hearing in a trial that is seen as a test for media freedoms in Turkey.
The 13 defendants in the case include two prominent investigative journalists, Nedim Sener and Ahmet Sik as well as editors of Oda TV, a hard-line secularist internet news portal critical of the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Prominent Turkish journalists went on trial accused of links to a shadowy group seeking to topple the government, in a case that has fuelled Western concern over media freedom in Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s Turkey.

I write to you on behalf of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) of North America and its Committee on Academic Freedom in order to express our dismay and concern over the October 28th arrest of Professor Büşra Ersanlı, professor of Political Science and International Relations at Marmara University, who was later charged under the Anti-Terror Law on grounds that her membership in the BDP (Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi-Peace and Democracy Party) allegedly links her to the PKK (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan- Kurdistan Workers’ Party)
ESA was founded in 1966 to promote scholarship and teaching on the Middle East and North Africa. The preeminent organization in the field, the Association publishes the International Journal of Middle East Studies and has nearly 3000 members worldwide, including more than a hundred who are scholars, teachers or students at institutions of higher education in Canada. MESA is committed to ensuring academic freedom and freedom of expression, both within the region and in connection with the study of the region in North America and elsewhere.
Professor Ersanlı is the author of over 50 scholarly works on Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Russian Federation, Eurasia, and Turkey. She is also a BDP member and was in the process of assisting the party in preparing draft proposals for the new civilian constitution. Professor Ersanlı was arrested only a day before she was to attend an academic conference at Bilgi University on “Controversial Issues in the History of the Turkish Republic.” Her arrest not only is an infringement of her ability to exercise academic freedom in providing expert advice on constitutional reform; it also prevents her from participating in professional exchanges with other scholars…
Une situation critique pour la liberté de recherche et d’enseignement
Les mesures de répression gouvernementale et les attaques portées contre la recherche et à l’enseignement universitaire en Turquie se sont intensifiées depuis 2009. Elles ont atteint un niveau alarmant avec l’arrestation, en octobre 2011, de la professeure et politiste Büşra Ersanlı de l’université de Marmara, du directeur des prestigieuses éditions Belge Ragıp Zarakolu, du doctorant en science politique, éditeur et traducteur Deniz Zarakolu, ou de l’étudiante en science politique de 21 ans Büşra Beste Önder. Ils sont détenus dans le cadre des «opérations [anti] KCK», accusés d’appartenir à ce «Rassemblementsocial du Kurdistan» que dirigerait la rébellion armée kurde du PKK. Ces accusations ont pour seul objectif de faire taire les intellectuels indépendants et de menacer les chercheurs, les universitaires, les étudiants. La justice en Turquie collabore à ce processus de persécution en généralisant la détention préventive des gardés-à-vues, en ordonnant pour certains d’entre eux (Ragıp et Deniz Zarakolu) leur incarcération dans des prisons de haute sécurité, en réduisant les droits de la défense, en s’acharnant sur les prévenus –comme la sociologue Pinar Selek plusieurs fois acquittée ou les journalistes d’investigation Ahmet Șık et Nedim Șener eux aussi accusés de «terrorisme» dans le cadre des procès «Ergenekon» et maintenus en préventive-, en organisant des procès d’Etat…

Büsra Ersanlı n’est pas connue du public français, et il n’est pas fréquent (pas encore) qu’on procède, même en Turquie, à l’arrestation d’un(e) universitaire.
Le prétexte à l’arrestation de Büsra Ersanlı est évoqué dans les communiqués qui ont été publiés ces derniers jours (voir dans ce blog ainsi que sur les sites Turquie européenne, Info-Türk et Collectifvan.org) : sa participation à l’Université du Parti pour la paix et la démocratie (BDP), ses travaux de constitutionnaliste.

Monsieur le premier ministre, vous disiez hier : “Nous menons une lutte très intense contre le terrorisme. Nous réprimons de manière très décidée. Mais en faisant ceci, nous ne concédons rien de la démocratie, des droits et des libertés. Nous agissons en la matière avec une sensibilité à couper les cheveux en quatre… ” En est-il vraiment ainsi, Monsieur le premier ministre?

L’Europe veut voir dans le gouvernement turc et dans son leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan la solution à toutes ses peurs devant la montée des partis islamistes au lendemain des révolutions arabes. Puisque ceux-ci invoquent le modèle de l’AKP turc – promoteur dit-on d’une voie originale de démocratie islamo-conservatrice -, il n’y a plus lieu de s’inquiéter, la marche vers la liberté se poursuivra sans faillir ! Ce soulagement est exprimé en boucle, notamment par de nombreux commentateurs de politique internationale.
